The Details

Whether you are new to plein air painting (painting what is in front of you outdoors) or have been doing it for a while, but need some new methods to shake you out of old habits, this class is for you!

This class is designed for beginner to experienced acrylic and oil painters. If you are completely new to any painting, consider a few private lessons before jumping into this class. (I offer those on Wednesdays and Saturdays)

We'll begin each of the two days at the gallery with demonstrations of techniques and materials before heading out to paint at lovely nearby parks!

The mass appeal of plein air painting is the combination of being outdoors at the same time as creating! The first few times out doing it can be shocking experiences as we begin to realize the extreme challenges!

We can't control: wind and rain (or snow), the sun moving, bugs, temperature, people watching us, and how complex nature is!

The best way to be equipped is to have simple strategies for those things we can control: efficient gear handling, planning our composition, color harmony, intentional paint handling, and even anti-frustration techniques!

I'll show you all my gear (cheap, expensive, heavy, and light versions) and how it's evolved over the years or to fit "hiking/biking" plein air sessions as opposed to "drive up and paint". (We will be carrying our gear a short distance from the car for this class.)

Class size is limited to 8 students to give plenty of one-on-one support.

"I wanted to commemorate my husband’s first glacier climb.  Britt helped me select a photo from the climb.  She helped me to realize the ‘what’ that I was trying to capture in a painting.  I selected a challenging scene of mostly glacier snow and ice.   Britt was able to show the texture of the snow as well as capture the action of the climbers as they move up the glacier.  I am absolutely thrilled with how the painting came out.  I definitely recommend her as a painter of commissioned art!"
